[SOLVED] Converting April 30, 2009 to 1241049600

How do you convert April 30, 2009 to 1241049600? I have a variable date that I need to be able to convert to epoch in php.

I've tried mktime, but it does not seem to be working properly, when I do mktime($day=$day,$month=$month,$year=$year) it does not seem to turn out properly. Though it is possible that there is an error in another section of my code.
