last_insert_id

Can someone tell me what the correct syntax for this would be? Based on examples found via google this seems to be okay, but i'm still getting a syntax error. "..for the right syntax to use near 'WHERE session_id=LAST_INSERT_ID()' at line 1"

$sql="INSERT INTO sessions(logout) VALUES(NOW()) WHERE session_id=LAST_INSERT_ID()";
dbQuery($sql);

I've also tried this:

$sql="INSERT INTO sessions(logout) VALUES(NOW()) WHERE session_id=(SELECT LAST_INSERT_ID())";
dbQuery($sql);

and this:

$sql="SELECT LAST_INSERT_ID() FROM sessions";
$result=dbQuery($sql);
$sql="INSERT INTO sessions(logout) VALUES(NOW()) WHERE session_id=$result";
dbQuery($sql);

All give me virtually the same syntax error in the WHERE clause.

Edit: in that last codeblock, echoing $result reveals it as 1, which is incorrect, it should be 4. The same happens if I use MAX(session_id) instead of LAST_INSERT_ID().
