[SOLVED] Importance of the domain

Hey guys,

The domain name is obviously important SEO wise, but I would simply like to ask how important the "ending" of it is (sorry, I don't know the word for it). I mean, is there a big difference between a .com domain and a .net domain? A lot of people say that you should always get .com, but it is nearly impossible to find a decent one due to the domain buying companies out there.

So would it be ok to go with .net over .com or would that be a bad move SEO wise?

Thank you in advance.

IMO it's not really all that important any more.  For a while it was, because it was the one tld that people could remember more than anything else. Now that that internet has been around for a while, people remembering things like that isn't such a big deal.

However, it is also IMO that choosing a .com is important in the sense that you should choose something that is available as a .com.  AND .net.  AND etc.. in other words, you should pick a domain name where you can buy all at least the .com and .net version of it, so as to avoid people taking away from your own business, and also avoid potentially getting into scraps with companies that have that alternate of what you choose.  I mean for example, do you really think microsoft would sit by and let you own microsoft.net?  Or conversely, what if you chose yoursite.com and next thing you know someone makes a yoursite.net but it's some competitor of yours? Or worse, something that could give your business a bad name, like a porn site.

Point is, the tld isn't a big deal in and of itself, because you should be picking something in which you can register or buy out all of the major ones.

And this extends to even buying out spelling variations of your website that people might commonly typo.
