synchronise and asynchronise

Do you mean asynchronous? In an AJAX sense, to put it simply, it's the HTTP request kind of working behind the scenes - 'asynchronously' - to the rest of the site. It quite literally means "not at the same time". So you can have several HTTP requests all working at the same time, asynchronously to each other and the rest of the site. If that makes sense?
