PHP/MySQL subqueries generating errors

Hello,

Though I've got a lot of knowledge with PHP and MySQL, I've just started working with subqueries. I've got a few written based on tutorials I've read on the net, but none of them seem to work. They're generating the standard MySQL syntax error that doesn't specifically tell you where the error is occuring.

I'm hoping someone here can shine some light?

Here's one of my lines:

mysql_query("update `_vendors` set `licenseExp` = (select licenseExp from `_vendors-temp` where id = '$id')") or die(mysql_error());

And here's the error I'm getting:

You have an error in your SQL syntax. Check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'select licenseExp from `_vendors-temp` where id = '1')' at line

Thank you in advance.
