monkeytooth
Ok, this question is going to most likely be completely off key to the forum. But this forum is the one I frequent most, and always always has the best answers when I am In need. I have 2 extremely large projects coming up soon. Both that are going to require rack based systems to run. My question is. Does anyone know of a good resource or 2 or 3 that I can find a way to build up a server rack system from the ground up. That can run the 2 projects I am going to be building. The projected analysis is we will be looking at a couple million registered users within the first 2 years of the service. We want to host in house in our own data center. But my client does not want to go outside of me and mine despite my advisement of doing so for building up an infrastructure like he wants. I have my own personal reasons as well as to why I would like to learn a bit more about putting together a data center and having a signal site or multiple sites running off of it. But for the moment its mostly him. As I mentioned before I know this is completely off key. But any help would and I would be very thankful for. trq
I'm sorry to say, but if your not sure how to go about doing this then your likely not the right person for the job. We have our own data centre at work and while I have around 7-8 years experience with Linux and servers (and currently administer a group of 5 dedicated machines for my main project) I'm not even aloud in that room. monkeytooth
Oh I never said I was the ideal candidate for the job.. not even by a long shot. But talking to my client about it has made me wanting to at the least look into it, not only for his benefit but mine as well.. Networks I can run no and maintain no problem. Its the larger racks that confuse me as I never really had much place to play with them. So trying to find a place I can learn some of the key differences outside of the obvious. Get a better idea of how they run. How they integrate together to make a collective entity as opposed to several smaller entities. sKunKbad
If the client insists, you might have to say, "I told you so" in the end. I set up a webserver at work, just to get a little experience, and it was a great learning experience. I just used an old desktop computer and Ubuntu Server Edition. I ran 5 websites off it for about a year, and as far as I know, I never had a problem. If I had a client that insisted on me buying him/her a server and running a website, I'd do it, but that doesn't mean it would be done right. It also doesn't mean that their data would be safe, but it sounds like your client doesn't really care. Honestly, you might think about getting an old computer, like I did, installing Ubuntu Server Edition, and giving it a try. Ubuntu forums has massive support. You'll need to read a lot to get going, but it's worth the time, and I think you will have fun. monkeytooth
Well a stand-alone web server I have done, no problems. I can do that all day every day if I had to. However I am attempting to find any resources I can about setting up in essence a mini data center. For a single site. One or two racks, about 60 blade servers a firewall switch etc.. what I am trying to find out is how do the big boys take all 60 blades and have them act as a collective rather then individual slaves. Cause with the a setup like they are looking to invest in. I can set up each blade as its own server. But I need to make them all work together. One or 20 desktops aren't going to be able to handle the load so to speak. Garethp
Try googling "Distributed Computing Solutions". This is the first result I came up with http://www.ubero.com/ Quote Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/173947-web-site-servers/#findComment-917120 Share on other sites
