MySQL query export to excel

I have a query that I run and it displays fine on the web page.  I am now wanting to add export to excel funactionality.  Not sure if I should do this from the page or just create a script to do it straight from the db.  I have googled this topic and can not really find much on what I am trying to accomplish.  Will someone please point me in the right direction.

 

PS. I know that I can get it to export by right clicking on the datagrid but would like to make it a lot smoother for the end user.

Here is something I found online...not sure if it will work for you or not but it's worth a try I guess....

  c)all of the above also holds true for the name of the Database:
    you could pass along the name of the Database as a parameter to this script

To change the formatting of the Word or Excel File generated:
change the respective parts of the coding for the word or the excel file that format
the database info sent to the browser.  Most useful for this are the escape characters
for tabs ('\t') & line returns ('\n').  Experiment with these until you get the formatting
that you desire.

darkvengance's approach requires a Windows webserver with Excel installed in order to use COM.

If you need a pure PHP solution that will run on any platform, then a library like PHPExcel will allow you to create/populate an Excel worksheet directly from PHP
