simple if question

i am still learning javascript as i am new to this..i try this code but no effect, hope that anyone could help. THX a lot

{

  var x=document.getElementById("text1")

  if(x =="0"){alert("you have to fill!");}else{

  alert("Yeah, you got it!!");}

}

<input type="text" name="text" id="text1" />

<input type="button" onclick="button()"/>

 

</form>

</body>

</html>

 

This code didn't run well as when i left the textbox empty and still alert("Yeah, You got it!")
