I wouldn't ever pay for Linux, but that's just me. Allot of companies need to have service agreements in place to ensure there maintenance.

 

If your a small business you may be able to use CentOS without problem if you just hire the right people and provide your own support. I'm not sure how, but the company I work for has to that we have supplied maintenance in place in order to comply with the Sarbanes–Oxley Act. This leads to various issue with free or open-source software at times.
