An IPN is when Paypal calls one of your scripts with the payment details. That part will not change whether it is live or sandbox mode. When you receive an IPN, you have to verify it with Paypal, you have to send it back to them and they tell you if it was a genuine IPN or not. When you verify it, that is where sandbox/live differs. When live you will be connecting to ssl://www.paypal.com to verify the IPN When in sandbox you will be connecting to ssl://sandbox.paypal.com to verify it.
