How is this possible?

Hi all, Im looking to recreate this effect where when the browser window is resized, elements appear/dissapear.

If you look at http://method.com/#/work/brand/ and resize your window you will see what i mean. If the browser becomes small all the work dissapears and page numbers are added so you can keep scrolling through?

 

I hope this makes sense, Does anybody know of any tutorials on how this effect is created, alternatively can anybody recommend javascript books for me to read?
