ajax "add as friend" button. How would i go about this?

I want to create a button that adds a user to their friendslist on click, and i can't have the entire page reload so i need ajax, I'm new to ajax so I was hoping someone could point me in the direction. I have been looking it up for awhile but none of the tutorials are working, or make much sense, :\
