I'm curious, since the nofollow attribute essentially raises the integrity of a webpage

Where did you get that information from?

 

nofollow simply prevents Google from passing any pagerank or anchor text keywords through the link. Spiders will not follow the target link from the source. It does not stop the target pages getting indexed if they are linked to from other sites or have been submitted to Google.

"nofollow" does not raise the integrity of your page. It is just a mechanism to help you control how your own "reputation" on google is passed along, whether or not you vouch for the content/site the link is for.

It does not specifically say you get "rewarded" for doing it, just that it helps prevent possible punishment, because if you link to shady sites, that could in turn lower your own rep.
