how do I create thumbnails from pdf documents and/or get the amount of pages

I need a way to make a small thumbnail of the first page of a PDF document.
I am also trying to find how to get the amount of pages in the PDF document.

Would I need pdflib for this or is there an easer way?

I’m writing a PDF document management system to store and organize pdfs and these two things would be extremely useful but I haven’t been able to find anything about it.

I looked into it but I'm not able to figure out how to do this? It's for postscript files so how do I do it for pdfs?
