Embedding sound into a brower

Hi,

I offer online food ordering solution's to restaurants. Restaurants who receives the order, receives on a web based order management application i have build

They get notified with a sound that gets played that says "New Order", each time a customer places a new order.

I currently have a java script code that plays a sound file for each new order that gets made.

But the problem is that it does not work on all browsers... some browsers needs  a quicktime plug in, and when it does play, it slows the computer down, or sometimes the sound file breaks up.

Is there way to play sound through PHP.... can you guys recommend an alternative method?

Thanks
