Paypal Subscriptions

I'm confused!

I can work out how to generate a standard buy now button:

<form name="_xclick" action="https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr" method="post">
<input type="hidden" name="cmd" value="_xclick">
<input type="hidden" name="business" value="<?php echo $r['paypal_address'];?>">
<input type="hidden" name="currency_code" value="GBP">
<input type="hidden" name="item_name" value="Truro.com Sale - <?php echo $r['page_title'];?>">
<input type="hidden" name="amount" value="<?php echo $r['price'];?>">
<input type="image" src="<?php echo $root;?>furniture/buy_now.jpg" border="0" name="submit" alt="Make payments with PayPal - it's fast, free and secure!" width="196" height="67">
</form>

and even a subscription button, but what I want is the script to ping back to me with variables that I can use to activate a digital service. I want things like the member id, the product id, whether the payment was successful... you know, the usual junk.

The documentation's confusing the hell out of me.

Has anyone here done it, and if so is there something like a "dopey dude" guide to figuring it all out?

I don't know why, but I find the whole Paypal programming platform totally impenetrable.
