I've tried searching for specific phrases within the META code and my website never appears on google. For example lets say I want to search the term: alternative therapy for migraines in quote marks and it only has 8 pages of hits of which my website is not even one of them. My website has been added to google but search words don't seem to work. What am I doing wrong? You want to look at SEO (Search Engine Optimization). This is the art/magic/hookum that people use to get their websites to do well in the search engine rankings. There are essentially three parts to it: 1) Using semantic HTML, which means using the correct tags for the content they contain 2) Having good, unique content 3) Getting links from relevant sites to point to your site #2 is probably the most important, with #3 coming next.
