Newbie Questions preg_replace

Hello,

 

I know nothing about php and am learning this to edit some wordpress plugins.

 

in a file, there is a function listed as this:     static function get_user_info() {

 

and in that function is this code:

            if ( $current_user->user_login != '' )
                $user_info_string .= __( 'From a WordPress user', 'si-contact-form' ) . ': ' . $current_user->user_login . self::$php_eol;

 

 

so i did the following:

 

add_filter('get_user_info', 'pregtest');
function pregtest() {
echo preg_replace('$user_info_string .= __( 'From a WordPress user', 'si-contact-form' ) . ': ' . $current_user->user_login . self::$php_eol;', '$user_info_string .= __( 'From a user', 'si-contact-form' ) . ': ' . $current_user->user_login . self::$php_eol;', '', -1);
}

 

This didn't work.  what did i do wrong?

Well, what are you trying to do? You say it didn't work, but we don't know what that means. Did you get an error (if so, what) or did you not get the results you expected? Since you didn't state what you are trying to accomplish we can't state whether the results are correct or not based on the code you wrote or if the code needs to change.

 

But, I can say that the code is not right, just not sure how to modify it to get what you want.

 

What would be helpful, is to show the sample content that you are working with and what you want that result to be.

yeah it gave me an error.

 

while i want to do more than this, i want to understand the preg_replace better.

 

all im trying to do is that this, and remove the part Wordpress from From a WordPress user, using preg_replace.

So you dont want the word Wordpress in the phrase From a Wordpress user? If so then delete the word wordpress from that line of code. No need for preg_replace here.

this is for a wordpress plugin that gets updated.

that information that i could change in the actual file is just going to be readded every new update.

putting preg_replace in functions.php (totally outside the file getting updated) means it will always replace the plugin's code.

so i need to use preg_replace.

For what it's worth, you don't need to use regular expressions for this problem. A simple string replace should do the trick.

 

Basically, you would take the string which contains the unwanted text and run it through something like str_replace(). Here's a quick example:

$user_info_string = str_replace('WordPress ', '', $user_info_string);
echo $user_info_string;
?>

well, i was just trying to learn preg_replace and use that.  i'm doing more than just changing 1 word.

i was going to make a seperate add_filter for each change i was making to this plugin.

for example this is a piece of the plugin's code.

i actually want to totally remove some of these, i just wanted to start with something basic so i could understand the function of preg_replace.

for example out of that code i want to completely eliminate.  the removing the one word of wordpress was simply a learning tool so i can understand this function.

preg_replace() isn't that much different than str_replace(). They both require at least three arguments. You need to tell the functions what you are looking for, what to replace it with, and provide the string(s) to perform the replacement(s) on. More information about preg_replace() can be found here:

My recommendation would be to experiment with preg_replace() and/or str_replace() in a simpler context. Try to get it to work on a plain string, like in my earlier example. Once you understand how the functions work, you can start figuring out how they can be incorporated into your project.

okay i error checked this so i know this code is right:

im basically removing the string from the file... however, in practice it doesn't work.

 

i thought the function was get_user_info because of this part static function get_user_info()  .... am i wrong?

gives me this issue: <b>Parse error</b>:  syntax error, unexpected T_STRING on line <b>5</b><br />

 

The first argument is surrounded by single quotes. So the single quotes inside the first argument need to be escaped. It should look more like this:

$preg_replace = preg_replace('__( \'From a WordPress user\', \'si-contact-form\' ) . \': \' . $current_user->user_login . self::$php_eol;', 'bar', $string);

Note, however, that variables will not work inside single-quoted strings.

 

With that said, I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish with the first argument. The argument should only contain the text you want to replace. If you're looking to replace "WordPress", for example, the code should look more like this:

$preg_replace = preg_replace('/WordPress/', 'bar', $string);

Note that I added the delimiters for the regular expression in the first argument.

something is wrong with the add_filter part now... its not replacing correctly :(

 

my code is 100% correct now as i tested it on a php test site.

 

this is the file with the string in it....

and then im using functions.php in my wordpress's theme's folder...

this is the entire file... add_filter('get_user_info', 'strtest'); is working on this.  the get_user_info must be the wrong thing?
