Just came across the article stating that WooCommerce as the leader of eCommerce platforms with the usage share over 27% of all online stores, while Shopify stands on the 2nd position with 21% share.

And other majors Stats were

  • WooCommerce has more than 5 million downloads on the WordPress.org plugin store.
  • At the time of writing, around 680,000 people have downloaded WooCommerce in the last 7 days.
  • There are more than 3.8 million live websites that use WooCommerce.

Mostly because WordPress runs (last time I checked) like 30% of the sites on the web, and WooCommerce is built by the same company.

If you have a Wordpress site, WooCommerce gives you a way of integrating a store.  It's plugin software that enhances your self hosted Wordpress.  If your business is run off Wordpress, then it is a good solution.

Shopify is Software as a Service/Platform as a Service.  You are paying to have your store, and perhaps your entire site hosted and run within the Shopify infrastructure.

Ecommerce giants don't use either of these platforms, so the number of downloads or customers really don't matter, other than to provide confidence that there will be support for either platform.

I agree with gizmola comments & to add one note:

* If you or client doesn't want the hassle of trying to figure out alot of the configurations that's required with WP (itself) and WooCommerce, then Shopify a good option (pretty easy to setup & manage).

However, there comes the difference w/the two - you'll pay (Shopify) for that ease-of-use vs getting WP & WooCommerce (pretty much) setup at little to no cost.
