mb_detect_encoding replacement for 4.0.3?

I am using php 4.0.3 on my old host server.

I want to use the "mb_detect_encoding" function in a script, but of course it didn't come out until 4.0.6.

Is there any way that I can create a function that does the same thing (and then use that function in my code wherever it uses mb_detect_encoding)?

Until I get my new server, I need to find work arounds.
