calculate length of a given text

It would be great if anyone know how to do this:

var myText = "This is My Text";
var fontFamily = defaultFontFamily;
var fontSize = defaultFontSize;

Given above variables and using javascript, is there anyway or even possible to calculate length of the text after it being rendered on the browser?

if you just want a "best guess" sort of average you could do something like:

var avgCharWidth = 6;
var myText = "This is My Text";
var myLength = myText.length;
var myWidth = myLength * avgCharWidth;

alert(myText + "\n is " + myWidth + "px wide");
</script>[/code]

I can not guess the ave char width because I need exact value in order to display nicely on a box.  The link you provided, however did the trick.
