The directory index appears if there is no index (index.html, index.htm, index.php, index.py or whatever the server is configured to use as index page) file. Alternately it may show a 403 Forbidden error if it is turned off.

 

For a production environment it would serve absolutely no purpose, except if the folder's purpose is to hold various files. On a development environment it can be used to, well... see the contents of the folder.

 

That you saw it was probably not intended.
