why isnt this working?

$quim=mysql_query("SELECT gangid FROM gangs WHERE gangname={$r['gang']}");

$rick=mysql_fetch_array($quim);

 

when i take out the WHERE part, the script works (but not what i need it to do) and when i add the WHERE it glitches up.

 

i need to get the value of gangname from table gang and store it in a variable.

Who knows, but some debugging might reveal all. Change your code to what's below are advise us of the output. Be more specific that 'glitch up', please.

 

$query = "SELECT gangid FROM gangs WHERE gangname={$are['gang']}";
echo $query; // what the realquery is
$quim = mysql_query(query) or die("Error ". mysql_error()); // what went wrong
