I'm not a HTML/XHTML/CSS expert (in every sense

of the word), I just wnat nice 1. and 1.1 and 1.1.1 when I need them

without resorting to javascript or php.

if this is for headings then you should use the h1 tag - there is a css property 'counter-increment' that can do all this for you - use it with content and you shoudl be able to achieve your goals (not having used this for a while and knowing how prro the support was back then - I suspect that little has changed but you can but try. The alternative is, I'm afraid, manual or javascript.)
