Well for a kick of before you can take credit card payments you need a secure server. in addition to that, if your planning on taking payments over ur site you need to be approved by VISA, and they hire crack hackers to try and break into your site to make sure its safe, if they can get into it then they wont allow you to handle payments. Furthermore you have to be very careful with how you store that information, i am talking separate servers over private lans and such.. all very messy...
