HELP: need script that can take the filename of the server side as a variable

I have some weird problem - after i upload my file to the server ( with ftp client ) i want to be able to take the name of the uploadedfile as a php variable and put it in my database. I dunno how to take the filename - probably i need some dir listing script and the client should choose the file for himself .. ttt its complicated .....
