Replacing spaces with other characters

Ok so far I have this

$str=file_get_contents("http://hiscore.runescape.com/index_lite.ws?player=Silver24-7");

$str2=strtr($str,",","#");
$str3=strtr($str2," ","#");
print_r(explode("#" ,$str3));


?>

The only trouble is it doesn't replace the spaces, and therefore I get 21 less records in my array then I should have.

Note the spaces show up in the records. (Each record should be a single string of numbers.)

str_replace(' ','whatever',$text);

 

Will replace spaces with 'whatever'.
