Trying to understand email using php, SMTP server response: 550 5.7.1

I'm learning php and am trying to send a simple email using this script:

mail("[email protected]", "This is the subject", "This is the body");

?>

 

I'm getting this error: SMTP server response: 550 5.7.1 apache

 

I am running this on a local apache server. What am I missing here?

 

This is the mail part of my php.ini

 

[mail function]

SMTP = localhost

smtp_port = 25

Do you have a local smtp server installed and configured?

I thought that was part of Apache. Do I need to find a smtp then?

Apache is a web server.
