Where can i find a tutorial/guide for php that doesnt sound too complicated

i have been reading an ebook and it kinda uses language that is hard for me to understand, well i can understand it but it uses big words all the time and it takes a long time for me to take it all in and work out what it means. is their any tuts that explain simply how php works, variables etc, in a step by step DIY guide that i can learn and test learn and test .. etc. ?
