Error 1045: access denied, only from phpMyAdmin, not from scripts or terminal

When I try to login to phpMyAdmin using the username 'root' and the password I have set for it, it fails and gives me this error:

 

Error

#1045 - Access denied for user 'www-data'@'localhost' (using password: YES)

 

The weird thing is that my PHP scripts can connect to the database just fine, and I can login to MySQL from the command line without problems. I have reset the password from the command line several times without it changing anything.

 

I have searched on the net around for a few days now, but haven't found anything that has helped me solve this problem. I'm running MySQL 5.0.38 and phpMyAdmin 2.9.1.1 on Ubuntu 7.04.

 

Any help is very appreciated!
