Stupid Questions People Ask, And The Answers

This took me quite a while to type up, but any mods are free to add to it.  This is a mod addition only topic, so if you want to add something please PM a mod with the stupid question and the answer.  Some things you will also learn here is how to use google (define, search, etc.) and how to do a bit of research for the answer.  Some very basic things that you better learn if you ever want to turn web development into a career.

What is Ruby/Ruby on Rails?

Seriously?  Okay, a very very simple google search will define it. "define: ruby"  I'll even throw in the link: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=define%3A+ruby&btnG=Search .  Now, just to be nice, I suppose I should include the answer as well, right? I'll only include the first answer to the question, but there are a few more on that page.  Also, take off the "define:" part of the search and you get lots of web sites with ruby: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ruby&btnG=Search

Ruby is an object-oriented programming language. It combines syntax inspired by Ada and Perl with Smalltalk-like object-oriented features, and also shares some features with Python, Lisp and CLU. Ruby is a single-pass interpreted language.

Ruby on Rails is just ruby with a framework. Kind of like PHP and CakePHP or PHP and Zend Framework.  Links:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=define%3A+ruby+on+rails&btnG=Search

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ruby+on+rails&btnG=Search

Ruby on Rails is an open source web application framework written in Ruby that closely follows the Model View Controller (MVC) architecture. It strives for simplicity, allowing real-world applications to be developed in less code than other frameworks and with a minimum of configuration. One of Rails' guiding principles is "Don't Repeat Yourself".

What is a framework?

Okay, well this is obvious, but I _HAVE_ seen this question asked quite a few times.  The second part to this question is below the answer to this one.  So, here are your links:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=define%3A+framework&btnG=Search (define: framework)

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=framework&btnG=Search (framework)

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=php+framework&btnG=Search (php framework)

those are common searches that you should perform first.  What are you asking about? Framework! So you just type framework. If you want it more specific type PHP FRAMEWORK!  And now the definition/answer:

In software development, a Framework is a defined support structure in which another software project can be organized and developed. Typically, a framework may include support programs, code libraries and a scripting language amongst other software to help develop and glue together the different components of your project.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Framework

What is a good framework?

Seriously?  Okay, I'll humor you here as well.  Apart from the VAST amount of topics that already cover this if you were to do a search in phpfreaks forums, which I guess I'll link to, but google has a whole slew of answers!  Links:

http://www.phpfreaks.com/forums/index.php?action=search2 (phpfreaks search: frameworks.  And look!  The second result is a POLL on different frameworks:  http://www.phpfreaks.com/forums/index.php/topic,152580.0.html WOW! That includes a whole list AND what people think of them!)

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=php+frameworks&btnG=Search

I guess for the answer I'll post a list of the frameworks i see most often:

Zend Framework

CakePHP

Symfony Project

Seagull Framework

PHP on TRAX

CodeIgniter

Windows or Linux?

Hmm.... I was hesitant to answer this one, but I guess I will anyways.  There are HUNDREDS of topics on this site alone that talk about this. So, here are your links:

http://www.phpfreaks.com/forums/index.php?action=search2 (PHPFreaks search: "windows linux"  not only does it cover that, but I also see debates that include Mac.  Hmmm.....interesting? I think so! Hard to search for?  Not even close!")

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=windows+linux+debate&btnG=Search (okay I searched "Windows Linux debate" and the first result is: Linux vs Windows (a comparison)  Does this sound like the answer you want or what?!?!)

No answer because there are to many opinions. Just look at the debates and comparisons and you decide.

What is a good FTP Program/Web Host/PHP Book?

Okay, we have a sticky for this!  Do you really need to continue asking when there is an entire TOPIC dedicated to this one thing?  Let me link you:

http://www.phpfreaks.com/forums/index.php/topic,113931.0.html (FTP Program)

http://www.phpfreaks.com/forums/index.php/topic,117475.0.html (Web Host)

http://www.phpfreaks.com/forums/index.php/topic,58799.0.html (PHP Book)

Nuff said!

Firefox or IE (other browsers may apply)

Okay, so here we go again.  I can't ANSWER this one because everyone likes their own 'flavor' but I'll link ya to some good links:

http://www.phpfreaks.com/forums/index.php?action=search2 (PHPFreaks search: "firefox ie" how hard was that? I just put the two I wanted to compare and BAM!)

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=firefox+ie+debate&btnG=Search (Google: "firefox ie debate")

What is SEO and how do I do it?

Doh!  Okay, first if you are going to ask anyone here their probably not going to provide much help on it without getting paid.  We don't do seo work for free.  Secondly, it isn't that hard to learn how to do it.  Third, DO NOT PAY MONEY!  The best seo work is the people who do it right. So lets define it, give some tips, and include some links:

http://www.phpfreaks.com/forums/index.php?action=search2 (PHPFreaks search: seo)

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=define%3A+seo&btnG=Search (Google: "define: seo")

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=seo+tips&btnG=Search (Google: "seo tips")

# Search Engine Optimization.

# The term used to describe the marketing technique of preparing a website to enhance its chances of being ranked in the top results of a search engine once a relevant search is undertaken. A number of factors are important when optimising a website, including the content and structure of the website's copy and page layout, the HTML meta-tags and the submission process.

www.websearchworkshop.co.uk/glossary.htm

The first three are are pretty self-explanatory! What do you NOT understand about it?

Submit your site to free search engine submissions

Have a robot.txt

Have a valid sitemap (google has tools that check to see if your sitemap is valid)

Link exchange (no need to pay. Just exchange links)

Include your link in your signature!  (This is not against forum rules and it is a great way to get it out there)

Valid CSS/(X)HTML is a plus here.

NO IFRAMES!

Some search engines don't care but google gets picky about the .php extension.  Only suggestion here is to parse .html through php engine.

What is a good forum software?

Yes! We get this question all the time.  I'm not even going to search google because of the obvious choices, but if you was going to search google you could try: free php forum software

SimpleMachines

PHPBB

IPB (not free)

VBulletin (not free)

Those are the most popular. Two free and two open source.

Okay, it took me about 10 minutes to answer these questions, and that was finding the questions that are asked most often. If you already know the question imagine how long it will take to find the answer?  I mean really, did I really do anything that was that hard?  I didn't work any voodoo magick or anything. I just used my resources.  Google and PHPFreaks search. No fancy key words or anything. just typed in the words of my topic and didn't bother with sentences.  Just the bare basics.

By the way. To all mods. If you add to this please keep my convention/order.  Bold the question, post a prologue, post your links, keep it basic, define/answer the question (where applies), and give tips/examples (where applies). On the define/answer and tips/examples please include them in quotes to make it easier. Then, after each question has been answered use the hand hr tag.  It is bracket hr bracket [ hr ]
