phpfanphp
If I have the internet coming in to a Linksys router with port 80 open ONLY to my apache server computer, and if I put another router downstream from the first router, are all computers on the downstream router safe? Aka, I have set up a demilitarized zone. Thanks! Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/70565-are-dmzs-safe-for-me/ Share on other sites
cooldude832
this has nothing to do with php, but if all traffic comming instream on 80 is set to a specific location, anythign downstream can't be hit on 80. neylitalo
Assuming your firewall is active and effective, yes, all of the computers behind the second router are safe. You can turn off the firewall on your second router if you like, and simply use it as a router and not a NAT device. One little thing, though: The term DMZ, in network lingo, refers to a section of the network, usually a specific machine, that has been completely opened up and has all firewall restrictions lifted. phpfanphp
Thanks for clearing that up about "dmz" - BAD LINGO on my part! Thanks for the hosting advice too!! phpfanphp
One other question - do you think if I only used a linksys WRT54G router with built-in firewall I'm safe? You can tell I don't want to buy a $250 cisco pix firewall! neylitalo
That's exactly what I had for several years, and it worked just beautifully. I've since upgraded to a build-your-own firewall with iptables, but it was perfectly safe when I did use it.
