[SOLVED] Hi, please can someone assist me with this code....not working

Trying to find and replace characters .....it looks like it cant replace the characters - and '      if i replace with other characters it works, please also check my update statement, not sure on that either. mysql throws me a syntax error with this code.

mysql_query($query) or
	die (mysql_error());
  }

  mysql_close($con);

This doesn't sound like it has anything to do with mysql, but rather with php's str_replace() function... if so, I'll move it to the appropriate forum.
