revraz
Reading books and trying things out. Have a goal in mind, what do you want to accomplish? Create a fictious scenario and build a site to make it work.

trq
I started with the book in my signiture, though I had previously programmed for a few years in asp. My best piece of advice. Don't try to rush it. Its much better to get a good grasp of the basics, really understand why things work together as they do, not just how. Its easy to learn the syntax of a language, but I see people here all the time asking questions about logic. Logic should come easy when you think about things in logical steps.
