bronzemonkey
A total newbie question here, but I know px and %, but what is em? An em is a relative measure of size. It allows you to produce scalable stylesheets. If the font-size is 16px then 1em is 16px; if the font-size is 10px then 1em is 10px. Em are one of the most useful tools in web design. - Setting font-size in terms of ems you can avoid the text-resizing issues that come with using px for font-size in IE. - By using ems to control font-size, line-height, padding, margins (even borders) you can develop a "vertical rhythm" where all your text and elements are properly aligned, whatever their different sizes, and are fully scalable - the design proportions are maintained when text is resized by the user. - You can conserve line-length by setting the max-width of your wrapper/container in terms of ems. In addition, by combining ems, %, and px you can produce an "elastic layout" - a layout that has a minimum width in pixels and is fully scalable until the page width would exceed the width of the browser window. #wrapper {max-width:60em; min-width:600px;} #wrapper #column1 {float:left; width:50%;} #wrapper #column2 {float:right; width:45%;} Very powerful stuff. Take some time to read some articles about ems in web design and try experimenting with them.
