forumnz
I wish to set up a server. I don't really mind if it doesn't work out but I'll use it as a learning experience. I have a spare computer (decent) with XP Pro. I have a BB internet connection and I already know I can use WAMPServer 5. What else do I need and how do I do it? Thanks heaps, Sam. trq
Firstly, I wouldn't bother using windows as a server operating system. Get yourself a lightweight Linux (Debian would be my recommendation). Wampserver (or any of the prepackaged *AMP stacks) itself is not built for production / live use. Once you have a decent OS, install and configure apache, php and mysql yourself. From there you'll need a good firewall, a router configured to allow port 80 into your server machine and a domain name setup to point to your ip. Honestly, if you want to do this as a learning experience, wampserver is a dead end, and Linux is a much more common server OS. OH, and PS. I told you how to set it up in your other thread. How many times do you need to ask? You won't learn anything without researching, and I'm afraid posing your questions in a forum is a pretty poor excuse for research. How do you think we learn't?
