Hi all,

I have been reading the Creative Commons Public Licence Wording but it has left me a little confused - if a design has been distributed under this licence, is it effectively available for anyone to use as they see fit - and make changes to the design?

Much like the GNU licence osCommerce and phpBB are issued under?

Hope someone can help me get to grips with this - I don't want to use something I am not supposed to!  ;)

Thanks!

There are different CC licenses, some of which support modification and redistribution. Everything licensed CC is free to use for whatever purpose, with restrictions as specified by the licensor.

In the license names, there are "sections" that mean different things. For example, if you see "sa" in the license name, that's short for "share-alike". If you decide to modify and re-release the work, you have to release it under the same terms. Here's a comprehensive list of the license modifiers:

by - This applies to each license. You must credit the original creator.

sa - Share and share alike. You are allowed to modify and re-release, but you can't change the licensing terms.

nd - No Derivatives. You cannot release modified versions.

nc - Non-Commercial. You're not allowed to use the work for commercial purposes of any kind.

This thread is more than a year old. Please don't revive it unless you have something important to add.
