Location Database

Do anyone know where sites such as www.totaljobs.com compile the location database from, so that you can do full location searching?

 

Really do not what to purchase the paf, but cannot find any sites that offer this kind of information.

if you don't need to go down to postcode sort of detail, but can live with cities, then you can grab a copy of the cities database from here:

 

http://www.maxmind.com/app/geolitecity

you'll need to do some cleaning up and decent filtering, but i've used it and got some pretty good results. coupled with some basic maths, you can easily work out what's "local" (ie within a certain radius), if that is indeed what you're trying to do.

 

keep an eye on other parts of that site too, as on their postcode page, they state:

 

These files have most of the commonly used postal codes, but are not complete. We plan to make more countries available over time, as well as adding region name, latitude and longitude columns

many of these sites that deal with postcodes to auto-fill address up to street level didn't start out like that - obviously extra features are added over time and with money.
