burge124
hi, a user selects which chapter to answer questions on (in dropdown menu), this result is caught in $chap. i want a the count function in a query, to use this variable to change the query depending upon what chapter is chosen. I have tried and tested the query is fine. i just dont know how to write this bit... $query = "SELECT ChapterID, COUNT( ******) FROM question GROUP BY ChapterID"; // query from total questions in chapter - amount of questions with true & false workout question number! $result = mysql_query($query) or die(mysql_error()); // Print out result while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)){ echo "There are ". $row['COUNT(*****)']." questions in this chapter"; echo "<br />"; } is it COUNT('$chap') or COUNT($chap) or COUNT(ChapterID = '$chap') etc etc? thanks Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/93498-count-function-using-a-variable/ Share on other sites
trq
Mysql's COUNT function expects a field name (or a wildcard) as its parameter. Your question is unclear at best.
