HELP Srever is in rescue mode need to save MYSQL data

Hi ALL

I have a linux server that is very ill. ITS in RESCUE mode right now. I was able to ftp the php and htm off the serve but now need a way to remove the MYSQL data so it can be restored after the rebuild. Has anyone tried this...am i hosed. ps...in rescure mode im not able to bring up mysql. could i tar the database files and some how restore them after the rebuild.... :?:

you cannot run mysql from the command line?

try copying the data files and using the restore command with them.
