Access to server logs?

This is a bit of strange question so let me explain my reasons.

 

My site has been hacked and had a hacking tool loaded on to the root of the site.

 

My site is hosted by a web host with really poor support who answer anything a little more technical than "how do I set up an email address?" with a standard "errrr....."

 

SO I asked for copies of the server logs or for them look in to how my site got hacked and when. And they say this is not possible as they cont keep the logs (sounds like a bad idea for a web host) and I think they just wouldnt know what they are looking for.

 

Anyway I was wondering if there is any PHP script I can run that may access the server log and show me the contents? I dont wanna modify it or anything just view?
