having problems getting images to float in wordpress.

what i type in is:

<div class="floatleft"><img src="http://localhost/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/dieie.thumbnail.png" alt="die ie" /></div>

when i save the file it saves as such:

<p class="floatleft"><img src="http://localhost/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/dieie.thumbnail.png" alt="die ie" /></p>

i am PRETTY sure that i have the css file set up right, but for safety's sake i will post that too:

.floatleft {
float:left;
margin-bottom:10px;
margin-top:10px;
margin-right:10px;
margin-left:10px;
            }

.floatright {
float:right;
margin-bottom:10px;
margin-top:10px;
margin-right:10px;
margin-left:10px;
            }

what i am trying to do is make my site and a few others purely from wordpress.  it involved editing some code in the templates such as commenting out sections and what not.  this is, as i see it, the final hurdle.  i dont want to have goofy looking formatting on the site.

thanks a lot for any help.  all is appreciated.
