1. I'm not sure why you would say the menu is too wide? Anything else? He actually wants to header to be flash which make take some work for me because I've only done some simple animations in flash, but I guess it's about that time to start learning.
2. This is a site I'm working on for a client. He liked a certain template so I based the site on that template. I did it all from scratch, but like I said, it was based on a template. [a href=\"http://www.jcombs.net/~jeff/allcounty\" target=\"_blank\"]http://www.jcombs.net/~jeff/allcounty[/a]

The site may load a little slow because I have not optimized the images enough yet. I need to compress a little more. I plugged in mostly dummy text and forms too because I'm of course waiting for content.

Anyway, how's it look?
3. The top section of the site is way too big before you actually get to the content area. The images are kinda nice, but why 4 big boxes taking up all that space. Websites are about drawing to content, it must be done in a way that is not distracting. It's hard to tell much about the site without any content in there yet. The news section seems out of place, or too small.
4. it looks ok, but it likes like pieces are just floating around with nothing holding them together. It is a little dull with the current color scheme. The menu is another element that seems to be floating around. You need to bring it all together more.
5. I agree it is pretty boring. I really don't like the blurry background used as a header with the pink text on it. The menu is strange and needs at least some more line height. I don't like the sub-menu hovering over the main menu when you rollover a link. Need some color and pictures, and why the google ads? Why must EVERYONE have google ads? Is hosting really that expensive.
6. I does not flow naturally. They eye doesn't want to jump all around a page like that.

Like I mentioned, forums are designed a specific way for a reason, easy for the user reading and navigating. Sometimes it is not a good idea to change something that is not broken just to be different.

Hi Lorian

thats a fair comment. again, like most of the stuff on the site, it seems like a 50/50 love it/hate it. i'm just trying to keep a different spin on all the stuff in the site, which is purposely why i didnt do it like a proper forum.

it's a valid point though - i'm sure i could have it laid out better than it is - but i'm fairly adament that i'm gonna stick to my guns and not lay the main forums/topics out like a proper forum. if anyone's got any ideas on the best way to do it, but still keeping the 'theme' the same, i'd be very keen to hear your thoughts.

Cheers
Mark

EDIT: oh - not sure who it was that tried to access an invalid forum by changing the URL, but thanks - you helped me find something that coulda been a major problem.

I don't like it, it is very confusing. There is a reason that forums are structured the way they are.

i suggest that you take another look at that site. i've seen your work and its great! but if you can not look at this site and see why it is good, than i really cant explain it to you

I've taken another look, and still fail to see why it is good.

i disagree. design is not all about flash and pizazz. simplicity is design and i think he has done a great job using it. look at the varying font sizes and colors and then the rollover colors. i think this is good work.

I guess I could just post a microsoft word document and that would make a geat site then... Afterall, Microsoft does a great job of formatting my text. I didn't recall mentioning flash and pizazz, but you are right, various font sizes and text colors certainly doesn't acheive it...

Are you using forms that contain an email address. If so then you are going to need a rewrite.
Checking that the form is being run from your server is no good because hackers are skilled at
hacking round these checks. Any form that contains an email address to send the email to are
an open invitation to spammers.
This answer didn't exactly help in any way other than telling me to protect my forms, which is what my topic was about.
11. I don't want to have a user input from an image file to send a simple email or sign a guestbook, but I have a couple sites that are getting hammered by spam throught these two forms. I don't think a timestamp will stop it, and the ip range is always different, so what's the best way to block it without creating images with text?
12. When I see a flash site I come to expect a little more. The navigation can use some work. The slide transitions are fine, but flash sites tend to be more graphical and pretty to look at. This site is clean, but missing something. There also seems to be a lack of color.

13. I'm a 26 year old male. Starting programming in college about 4-5 years ago. Mostly java, learned php on my own when taking web programming. I first learned some coldfusion and didn't like it then started reading up on php and mysql. I love database design and programming and also like graphic design ( wish I were as good as I'd like to be). I'd say I've been using php for about 2 years now and still learning. I'm 26, married and have a 7 month old son. I also work as an IT specialist for a the school board for about 4 years now. Hoping my BS in CIS will pay off soon, but for the time being I'm going to try out starting my own business in web development and IT consulting.

14. This may seem a bit picky and is just because of personal preference. To the submit buttons you should add a "cursor:pointer" so it looks like a link. Believe it or not some people wouldn't know to click it otherwise :)

Looks good though.

what submit forms are you looking at? Just the login?

15. oh yeah, this is the best looking site on the front page of website critique

id say hook yourself up with a favicon and you're gold. and look into the ajax thing, god is cool.

ajax - http://www.webpasties.com/xmlHttpRequest/

favicon - http://www.thesitewizard.com/archive/favicon.shtml

warn when a link, the one on the nav bar, is a pdf. the subbuttons with the black bg really throw off the great color flow that you've created. add some pictures!!! great looking site though, keep up the good work

I fixed the pdf link. I'm waiting for someone to give me pictures.

16. I've never heard that term before. I could do it with DOM and CSS but would have to change things up, I guess I'm somewhat lazy.

Ajax pretty much just means doing most things cliet side if I'm correct? (ie making the data available faster)

17. put the event calender on the left side. It is even sized for it! Why use a full size box in the middle of the page for it?

304763

The calendar is only on the index page and I don't want it as part of the menu column.

18. I'm just saying... someone is going to be more willing to start typing in those boxes for fun than if you put them on another page.  Probably nothing big to worry about... but it is a school website, and if the kids at the school use it for anything educational, I'd be willing to bet some of them have at least tried it.  Kids that age are very curious.  ;)

I'm sure they have, as the IT specialist at the school I deal with many annoyances.
