  1. First I must say that I like the site. It is very clean and functions very good and fast. I also am not a fan of anything that auto plays. My first instinct is to close (and I usually do this subconsciously before I even hear a sound or see a frame load thanks to slow load time on sites although yours was very fast). I let yours play for about 45 seconds before I was uninterested in the information being presented (went back later and fast forwarded it to watch some demo). While the video is a good addition I would rather have the ability to skim the basics first. Anyone even remotely tech or business savvy certainly knows why a site should be mobile optimized I think this info is too long and too slow. I would guess that anyone finding their way to this site to begin with has a good idea of why they need your service. I think there should be an alternative to the video. A landing page that give a concise out line of the info in the video with the focus being exactly what you are offering - if I got enough info is - a mobile version of a website hosted at cranbu.com. The video demo of your mobile site is good. I also agree the blog looks like a completely different site. Also, if possible it would be great see screen shots from live mobile sites - some with custom headers/footers/branding. I do wonder about the pricing. This seems quite steep. I am sure that people will pay it since it is difficult to keep up with technology these days. It seems there is almost no brand recognition available and costs a lot more to get any. $12 for for the very simplest site seems is too much especially since if the site is that simple it would likely not have that great of a need to be mobilized. Maybe paying by the year - 50-100 a year with multi year discounts might be more reasonable. But I am not your customer so I really have not idea. Run with it - you can alway lower it later or vice a versa.... offer a sale for a little while see how it goes. Other wise great site and I wish you great success!
  2. the color scheme is good. layout is good except need a little more padding on the top left - the rounded corner is cutting into the $ sign on the first line. Also, might be nice if the text wrapped instead of scrolling although for a learning tool that might be more confusing. Could use a little more information about the site and what it is doing, what crxml is, links to related sites etc. I am not familiar with crxml (other than what I learned int he google search I did) so am unable to judge its effectiveness as a demo although it seems it would be good. am using chrome 10.0.648.151 on mbp osx 10.6.6 1440x900
  3. I think you hit your mark. It is very clean and simple. Yet cool and interesting. I like the stationary color bar across the top. I might add a little more emphasis on what the site is (while it does say it right under the name - it could be bigger or more specific). Or not. Its just that coming from this forum your site could be anything and the point of it didn't smack me in the face. Of course I have been sick for the last couple days so I am a little groggy and the cold medicine is making me a little loopy. It could use just a little more separation beween posts. maybe a thin line or something. Also, these posts seem very random. Not sure what your goal is for the blog but it might be beneficial to provide more detailed info somewhere on the site about yourself goals and skills so that the reader can get a better feel for what to expect by following you. Although I like the about page. very cute. Noticed it says you are powered by Tumbler. I will look at the site more but have you created an iphone app on it? I am very interested in creating several iphone apps as simply and easily and inexpensive as possible. I am currently learning php mysql javascript and more but would like to know as little as possible and just plug in the content with as much customization as possible. (Have absolutely no idea how to create an iphone app but am hoping it wont be too hard - dont need it to do anything really fancy just provide some basic info - maybe some pics/video/audio)
  4. nice site. great idea. Love the minimalist approach. Very clean and easy to use. Was a little confused on what the site was - although I love the fact that it knew it was my first visit and gave me immediate instructions on what the site was and how to use it. Still was a little unclear what the site was about (maybe the domain name is some what telling but I wasn't paying attention to what it actually said). The way the information on the about page is laid out is little confusing to me. Sorry for my ignorance but I had/have no idea what the suave theme is or how one would acquire or use it. The links don't really clear anything up for me and since I am only hear to review the site listed I am not really interested in trying to figure that out. The way you put "This should help people:" and then put the other stuff separated by slash marks below was unclear to me at first glance that you were saying This site will help you search, find, upload, download or request and iphone app for use with the suave theme for iphone by thyraz. Might you list the items in a list fashion or with comas? I think this part "Later this is going to work for more themes, but currently only the suave + suave HD theme is supported." should be at the bottom since it might not be relavent to everybody. Otherwise I love the concept. Look forward to checking this site next time I need an icon for something. Also, maybe I missed it but it would be nice if there were a way to see all the available icons in addition to the lastest uploaded or requested. I am using chrome 10.0.648.151 on mbp osx 10.6.6 1440x900 Hope this helps! cheers~
  5. Well i only did one search and that was for my husbands name - who is a musician - whose website I have created and maintain - for which I also handle all social media marketing / youtube / general business management. I am immediately impressed with the information your site has shown me. I am self taught at everything and am always looking to see how we are doing on certain sites or what info is out there. I found somebody selling one of his cd's on ebay for $30 which is comical which is normally $12 or much less to download. I also found a link to a news site from back 5 years ago when a meth lab next door to us got busted and he was interviewed (or course the story was gone but the headline was there). I agree with the post above that it would be better if the list on the left didn't take you right to that site but instead opened the list on the right for you to review. Then I searched for restaurant site that I maintain. Found some interesting results there as well. Found a bunch of videos on youtube I didn't know where there. Interesting site. I will check it out some more.... Am very curious why the results seem to be different than if I had actually typed the same thing into that particular sites search box. Wouldn't mind seeing more choice on the left. Seems like a nice little shortcut.
  6. Overall the site looks and functions fine. I like the clean and neat layout. Couple of things: 1. You mentioned in your post that this is school project of sorts - While maybe you are not intending to make this a school or area specific news site it would be nice to know who/where the group is from without having to read the individual bios or watch a video to figure it out (btw the video about the trays very comical issue but well done video and news story). 2. I was unable to "view" any of the stories on the calendar page due to some issue with the server (over load or something) on the first try. 3. Not sure I get the calendar view. So your only doing one story a day? Perfectly reasonable however if this is the case I don't think that the day of the month is the most relavant way to list the story. I think you should add some more navigation for topics/categories that sort of thing. 4. If this is going to be a site based mostly around reading news/content I think that you should consider changing your color scheme as it is usually more difficult to read large bodies of text white on black. While I have made this choice on one of my sites that has a lot of text - I often think I should change it for that reason but am not able to pick a different color scheme I am comfortable with for it. I think you could easily move to a light grey with black or blue text for your wrapper. 5. I agree with the post above - the white box with the faded backgound pic and text could be much smaller - or maybe moved to a sidebar or something. It is way too big and takes up way to much screen real estate. The information in the box is not nearly important enough. The news should be the most predominate thing on the page - whatever page you are on - the largest item or thing attracting the most attention should be the most interesting thing. As far as I can tell the white boxes seem to convey messages that could easily be indicated by the name of menu item: when you click on archive it is obvious what one expects to find - instead of this box you could put a list of topics or a drop down menu of older dates that then take you to a list of titles (maybe with excerpts) of stories from that date/month/year or just delete the box and let people choose one of the video boxes. Also, should the archive menu item be named video archive? It doesn't seem to list any of the text content. When you click on newsthread it seems to me someone must be looking for news. Instead of taking up space telling them they came to the right place why not just let the see the news upfront and center - maybe a most recent post with excerpt could go there above the calendar. Spotlight: I am on the INN site and clicked on SPOTLIGHT but you are using what looks like about 250 pixels to tell me where I am. Some of that info might be better suited for a side bar (maybe a photo of megan with a quick explanation of what or how she picks the cool artists on campus or what make her an authority or how one can submit themselves or a friend to be considered. I am using chrome 10.0.648.151 on a mac book pro running OSX 10.6.6 1440 x 900. Everything seems to work smoothly.
  7. I like the clean and simple design. One thing I might change is to move the next and previous buttons to the top of the image since the for the larger images I have to scroll down to bottom (some very long) to get to the navigation buttons. Maybe positioned next to the like button. Also, are you using an external style sheet? If your site is going to grow at all that would be recommended. As far as the content.... not something I would care to spend time browsing but to each his own.
  8. is there anyone out there available to chat for a few minutes to answer some basic questions? please I am going out of my mind and just want to get started writing the code I have been studying for months but need to resolve my compatibility/configuration issues.
  9. K that sounds like something I did during the configurations for the test server. I was under the impression that all of those configs were for the test server on my machine and had nothing to do with the hosting server. I don't think I am able to modify the php config files used by yahoo so I dont know how I would turn the error reporting off. Of course after scheduling a call from yahoo and waiting 161 minutes for them to call me the call ended while I was on hold before speaking to anyone so I don't even know if Yahoo supports php5 or how to find out. As for invalid xml it seems unlikely to me since I copied it directly from a Lynda.com exercise file to ensure there were none of my own errors causing the problem.
  10. Hi everyone, I am very new to php. Please help! I have been searching the web for days now looking for the anwer. I am getting this message: MM_XSLTransform error I am using php 5.3.1. Apache/2.2.14 (Unix) Dreamweaver cs3 mac os x 10.6.3 yahoo webhosting. I am using lynda.com video tutorials to learn this and have copied this exercise file to my server to ensure that all code is correct (instead of my own that could possibly have a typo or something stupid) http://nathanmontgomery.com/php/news.php http://nathanmontgomery.com/php/_xml/artNews.xsl here is the phpinfo.php - it looks like everything i need is enable but is php 4.11 http://nathanmontgomery.com/phpinfo.php (i know i am not supposed to display this info but am frustrated and dont know what to do or how to move on from this seeming easy basic task.)
