The best advice I can give you is to reset your modem. I mean literally reset it to default, push the tiny little button in with a paperclip or something. You may have to reconfigure it afterwards, but if the problem persists, it must be your ISP. Either that or your default settings have the firewall up on your modem. -- Let me backtrack.. disable your modem firewall (if any) first.. then see if you need to reset. I give you this suggestion because you say every device on your network acts the same way, so whatever is blocking it is in the source... the modem.

Double quotes have the ability to parse the variables inside them.. Single quotes do not, they will contain whatever you put in them. Nevertheless, whichever quotes you do decide to use, if you want to put one of the same quotes within the string, you will have to escape it with the backslash $str = "Sometime I like to put quotes around a \"$variable\""; The same goes for single quotes. Not at all. OOP is a method of programming that involves using Objects... hence the name Object Oriented Programming. You'd be fooling yourself from the get-go to try and compare it to CSS; even if you could find a correlation, well... best of luck to you. Just as sinista already pointed out, Java is one of the best ways to get your hands dirty with OOP; just because (well, I'm no Java expert) it only uses OOP. The first thing you'll learn in any Java tutorial is how to build the constructor. I don't think I can stress enough that you should definitely dip into Java to get a feel of OOP. Simple because, you don't use procedural code like you can in PHP. By procedural I mean, you simply typing one statement and having a result. Your best bet is to get a Beginner's guide to Java.. familiarize yourself with a compiler (like BlueJ or Netbeans) and go from there. When you actually do get to the point where you believe you understand what OOP is, then maybe you should come back and look at the differences PHP offers as an OOP language.

MySQLi_real_escape_string expects you to put the connection variable as the first parameter. Though, the $connection->real_escape_string() method you used should have worked. Regardless, escaping the string isn't a MUST for it to work, but it is a must if you want it secure.
