It is especially useful in keeping <script> tags out, because those can be rather malicious. But if you think about, "PHP" tags shouldn't be a problem since anytime you want to echo text, you do the echo "string text" and not a function. Unless the php tags are "smart" enough to end the string text and add a semicolon - no worries!
