I wanted to apply the same style to all input submit buttons, without using a class or id.

 

I thought this would do it but it doesn't:

input:submit{
border-top:solid 2px #587464;
border-left:solid 2px #587464;
border-bottom:solid 2px #000000;
border-right:solid 2px #000000;
}

I think you are using the incorrect syntax for the "input:submit." But even if you do get it right, only Opera will render it properly, and maybe FF 3.0 beta. IE7 / IE8 will not render it properly.

 

The only solution is to use a class.
