tibberous
I just got a server, but it doesn't have anything but USB ports. Should I build a USB CDrom / DVD drive and hope that it boots? Can I somehow hook my drive up to one of the SATA's, install the OS on one drive, and then somehow set it up to mirrored RAID? wildteen88
There should be some sata ports on the motherboard to connect hard drives. You'll need an external cd drive to install the OS. tibberous
It comes with Windows Server x64 Enterprise, that costs more than the computer, lol. This thing is FAST! Two, Dual Core, Opteron's @ 2.6 and 4 gig of DDR2... and those crazy server fans that blow shit off your desk when they first kick on. Maybe I should have saved $600 and got this instead of my desktop? Who needs things like sounds and graphics and free SATA ports... wildteen88
How do you expect hard drives to be connected then, without any sata ports. no sata ports = no hard drives = no raid. tibberous
I said free sata ports. It has two ports and two hard drives. It is very fast though - I like the Q6600, and have mine OC'ed to 3.5, but two separate processors should be even better... Maybe I should have dropped a couple hundred more and got a dual opeteron board? zq29
I thought it was possible to install GNU Linux from a USB flash drive, not sure about Windows though - Might be worth investigating. serverman
do you have any free pci slots? you might want to buy a cheap sata card (2 ports) and a cheap sata cd drive then you can put bsd or linux on it.. tibberous
Actually I'm just dumb. I found IDE headers tucked behind the cover for the riser card =/ Link to comment https://forums.phpfreaks.com/topic/115619-no-floppy-no-cd-rom-or-open-sata-how-do-i-get-os-on-server/#findComment-594848 Share on other sites
