ruby on rails

Your forum knowledge whore is at it again... (lol  :D)

So my uncle says a bunch of guys on his development team SWEAR by Ruby.  It seems like a very interesting concept for a programming language to me.

But, like most aspects of web-development.  Before I invest many more hours into researching/learning this potentially useful language... I will come to my new found friends that reside in the phpfreaks forums and ask their humble opinions about it.

What is ruby about? - i mean I read all of these comments and resources about ROR, but I don't think little blurbs about how 'powerful' a language is truly gives a, first off, unbiased point of view and second a real feel for what the tools can/should/are used for.

I'm lookin for drawbacks/limitations/pro's/con's all of the above.

Is ruby worth my time?

Heh... I'm sure you're going to get some biased opinions when asking here. This is a website for PHP developers after all.

Nevertheless, I think that Ruby is a good language, but I hear it has some performance problems. I haven't confirmed that in any way at all though, so it might not be true.

I was asking your same questions about RoR, as people who support it looked over enthusiast. Mine was just interest as I'm in love with PHP, and when you're in love, all other things just vanish :). Never used RoR, but from what I've read it provides a good platform to develop on top. But it is a framework, not a programming language and that confuses everybody. PHP alone is powerful and highly flexible language, very open to everybody and willing to embrace you in its warm arms. Put on top of it a framework, maybe Zend Framework and you got a highly flexible language, but structured as well. Ruby on Rails can never become that even at its best; it's not designed that way. I would suggest reading Chris Shiflett's thought about Ruby on Rails. He is a very respected authority in PHP, but that article is really unbiased and the guy knows what he's talking about.
