It seems quite well-done, I just generally don't like those dark styles (but it doesn't mean they're bad).  It is quite nice and visually pleasant though.  One thing I'd fix is setting your DOCTYPE to XHTML Strict and validating: http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thedesignmonkeys.co.uk%2F&charset=(detect+automatically)&doctype=XHTML+1.0+Strict&group=0&verbose=1&user-agent=W3C_Validator%2F1.591

- Home and blog links are the same content in the central column? So the main 'meat and potatoes' is the right hand column? Not the most effective use of page real-estate. I would dictate the whole page to different content.

- I really like how you had the integrated login field along the top menu for the homepage.. but other pages have it missing. Should probably keep it consistent and keep that login system there site-wide. This also hints that you are not using a single include or require file for your menu.. I would strongly advise doing so.. using one file that is plugged into each page via an include or require makes for easy maintenance should you need to change anything in the top menu. This will make changes site wide.

- About page is missing /  non existent?

- Your site does not validate..

- Your home page css validation is close, but no cigar.

- Contact and home page the same content?

Over all, it is nice and simple. Just needs more page definition.

Ah, I just saw the footer and I dislike it.  It should definitely fit in more with the whole layout.  Also, for the shoutbox, the Nickname box is shifted over a few pixels.  Try fixing it. =P

And yes, your pages also do need a bit more unique content, I completely forgot to mention that.

Thanks for the comments guys...

Darkwater, do you think i should get rid of the footer all together or just redesign it?

Also, do you feel that because home and blog are so similar i should have something completly different on the homepage... I always seem to struggle to fill content in... the main problem is... what do you write about.

You are correct, my about and contact page are non existant at this time.... i am working on it....

Thanks

Garry

imo i would keep the footer but make it with the transperancy you use on the content. that way it blends a bit better with the look and feel of the layout..

Also to go further on dark layouts. i  generally like them as my screen is really bright but  the black background on the body and on your content  kinda drags my eyes outside the content area.

im  a stong beleiver in borders around content if even a light 1 px border a few shades lighter to to seperate the content

I think it looks nice and clean. I know I've seen the style once or twice with the blurry bubbles in the bg with some transparency overlay, but you pulled it off and it looks stylish. I think you ruin that basic look with the dotted white line under the menu.  Consider changing this.  I'd also consider something a little better for the menu.  A nice rollover image always makes me happy, even a changing background color is more effective than a simple text-underline. I'd also consider some type of footer that really puts an end to the content.  I think the portfolio section can use some work.  I think the images should have some kind of text to go with them and possibly an option to view more information.  Is the home page the same as the blog?

- I am finding that the homepage is starting to look a little cluttered. The eye is starting to dance around a bit much. I stopped and asked myself what it is that is causing this..and I think perhaps it is the numerous panels all over the place. If you look at the right hand side, you see multiple panels all stacked on top of one another (Shoutbox, categories, search, etc..). Instead of having those all as separate panels, I would suggest merging all those into a single panel instead. They would still stand out as separate functions by the spacing and the orange headers.. If still in doubt, you could always add a nice little thin horizontal divider graphic between each section within this newly merged panel.

Just by contrast, look at the panel setup in the 'Portfolio' page.. there is less of them.. the elements don't fight for attention as they do on the home page.

Something to consider.
